Little Bitty Baby Milestone Portrait on Nantucket

Oh how I love our Milestone Portraits! Little Owen was the most precious subject at just four weeks old! I love his little toes, how he is looking right into his mother's eyes and the comparison of his little foot to dad's hand. I can't wait until his next portrait session which we will do around four months. Andrea and Keith will look back at these photos and marvel at how tiny he was!

Nantucket Christmas Wedding: Jenna and Mark

Jenna and Mark planned their Nantucket Christmas wedding months and months in advance and I'm not sure they imagined it would have been a more beautiful winter day. The ceremony at St. Mary's finished right as the sun was descending and we walked around downtown Nantucket and took advantage of the the decorated quaint streets and harbor front. The first photo was taken on the bench where Mark proposed to Jenna over a year ago! Kudos to Samantha Hall and her team at The White Elephant along with Jodi Levesque for her amazing cake. I love the idea of a Nantucket holiday wedding!

DJ and Jeff: From California to Their Nantucket Wedding

DJ and Jeff could not have had a more perfect Nantucket wedding! Here is what DJ says in an email to me directly after the wedding: "A HUGE thank you to you and Mark for being our photographers for our big special day this past Saturday. It was truly the wedding of our dreams and you are the photographer of my dreams!! Everything was so perfect!"
From her Vera Wang shoes and dress, to the vendors and venues DJ chose for her wedding it honestly could not have been better.
Here's shout out to some of my favorite vendors on the island: Dawn Kelly of Soiree Floral, Marty Kelly Papers, Nicole Whelden of Unique Nantucket, The Galley Beach, and Jodi's Cakes.
A special thanks to my second shooter, the talented Mark Crosby, who did a wonderful job from the balcony of the First Congregational Church (the recessional), who is a whiz with the wide angle at Brant Point and who grabbed to great shot of DJ and Jeff being announced at their reception.

Kelly and Zach Get Married on Nantucket!

Kelly actually found me on Facebook! She used to work at the pharmacy on Main Street so we stopped up there for some photos. Their intimate Nantucket wedding was in a private Monomoy home with close friends and family. I was so honored to be a part of their day. Kelly, you are so adorable.

Second Shooter Shots Sure Shine!

It seems that my second shooter George (who is an aerial and real estate photographer and a pilot) had some fun at Brooke and Moh's Vineyard wedding a couple weekends ago! From grabbing an aerial on his way over Chappy to some very creative shots during the day, George was able to work angles that I couldn't grab. That's the beauty of having another set of eyes at your wedding.
A couple of notes: The balcony view of the recession down the aisle may have been an accident of a very low shutter speed, but it sure does capture a feeling! While Brooke was twirling her new husband was checking football scores on his Blackberry. The very last shot is a series of shots of the tent put together in photoshop to make the panoramic.
Thank you George of Over Nantucket for the great shots and also for the ride home to the other island! I'm looking forward to our next wedding and plane ride to the Berkshires in a couple of weeks.

Rain, Rain, You Don't Have to Go Away! A Vineyard Wedding.

What a wedding! I think I had just as much fun as the couple (well, probably not, but close!). It just shows that the rain does not have to take away from the photographs. From the beautiful little church in Edgartown to the Chappy ferry to the biplane to the Jeepster back at The Field Club we had a wonderful day for pictures. The guys at the Katama airfield actually rolled the biplane out of the hangar for us and the Chappy ferry guys took off from the dock for the photo op! I loved Brooke and Moh's theme of transportation for the photographs! It couldn't have been more creative.
Thanks to Brooke and Moh for their incredible spirit and love; you guys made it easy for me. The families, the venue, the entire wedding couldn't have been better! Event design by David Beahm Design. Reception at The Field Club in Edgartown. Stay tuned for next blog entry for some more shots from the wedding by my second shooter and aerial photographer, George Riethof, of Over Nantucket, who, thanks to his multiple talents, got me home in one piece the very same night.

A Few of My Favorite Images

It has been a busy summer for me between Nantucket weddings and Boston weddings. The first wedding was at the Boston Harbor Hotel which was spectacular in itself, but Melissa and Pat really made my day when they agreed to be photographed on a little Boston carousal!
Caroline and Jeff, on the other hand, made an amazing discovery during their wedding: a hurricane does not make or break the day. Their wedding was moved from a garden tent to the Siasconset Casino thanks to the talented Kendra Lockley from Simply with Style. Nantucketers are always prepared for anything!
I promise to post more soon, but today I'm off to the Vineyard to shoot a wonderful wedding in Edgartown!

A Beautiful Nantucket Family Gets Real for Their Annual Nantucket Portrait Session

I love this family! I have been photographing them on Nantucket for years and they are always so natural, so fun, so adorable, so real. It's a pleasure going out with them for our annual shoot. This year I asked them if they'd be up for something different and being the wonderful people that they are, they said, of course! So we met at Old South Wharf and made a trip around the wharf stopping to shoot. Are these kids adorable or what? Thank you so much.
PS. I have been so busy this summer that I have to apologize for neglecting this blog! Please forgive me. I promise to catch up soon. I guess busy is good! More soon!

An Intimate Nantucket Wedding

Sarah and Scott found me a little over a month ago. They wanted to get married on Nantucket during Scott's annual family vacation in Monomoy and started putting out feelers for their wedding plans. They live in LA and during a light interaction at Sarah's workplace discovered that one of her regular clients had Nantucket connections. Well, it turns out that the connection was my former sister-in-law (who lives in LA) who recommended me as the "best" Nantucket wedding photographer! So, I was honored and thrilled to shoot their wedding.
The shot below was taken in Monomoy which is personally one of my favorite spots on the island. I don't think I've ever taken a bridal couple down there before! It was glorious. The three black and whites were taken at the Wauwinet where they had their ceremony on the yoga deck. I love small and intimate weddings. Thank you guys and congratulations on ALL fronts!

Changing Light on Boston Harbor

Matt and Lauren were married at the Courageous Sailing Center in Charlestown just over the bridge from Boston. What a spectacular view we had as the light changed. I had to start off the selection with a couple of my favorite portraits from Copley Square, especially the first one which was heavily backlit. The rest of the images show the light from midday throughout the portraits, ceremony and as the sun set into the night. It was a magical day and I felt as though I was transported to a different world. I have to say that working with the Weitzen family for the second wedding was more than a pleasure. I love what I do and especially when I'm as appreciated as much as they appreciated me! Thanks Matt and Lauren.

A View of the Tent of the Tent With a View

Amanda and Peter were married last Saturday at the home of the groom's family in Shimmo on Nantucket and I wanted to share with you some various shots we took either of the tent, from the tent or in the tent.
The tent went up a few days before and I happened to have been on an aerial photo shoot with George Riethof of Over Nantucket and grabbed this aerial of it. Aisling Glynn of ACKtivities coordinated the entire wedding; I love working with her! She told me that her idea was to build the floor for the tent straight out from the house so that the guests had the illusion that there was nothing between them and the ocean. It worked! It almost felt as if we were on a ship looking out onto the water. Great foresight and great execution by Chase Canopy.

The decor and floral design was so elegant and matched the harbor setting. Dawn Kelly and her team of Soiree Floral outdid themselves again! I've been working with them a lot this season and they take a really unique approach to each wedding and each bride's individual taste. Check out the tabletops too provided by Placesetters!

Libby Greene of our studio stopped by the house before the ceremony to capture the guys getting ready while I was at The Westmoor Club with the ladies. This shot was captured from the deck just outside the tent.

I really enjoyed photographing all the elements of the day as the light changed and Capron did a wonderful job on the lighting of the tent and around the home. I especially love twilight. I can't wait to see what Lisa from Nantucket Event Media captured on video.

And last but not least this last shot was taken on Sunday morning from a friend's boat. Thanks for taking me out, Ack Boater. Check out the latest Nantucket Waterfront News.

Backlight at a Brewster Beach

I love backlight. I love backlight. I love backlight. There! Did I say it enough? Romantic, soft, flattering. I always have a wedding guest ask, "Isn't the sun supposed to behind you?" or "Why are you shooting into the sun?" Well, I just smile and thank them for their help, but really, the feeling that is created by backlighting your subject is just plain sexy. The top image was taken with my new baby, the Nikon D700, and the bottom one with my workhorse, the Nikon D3. Raw files tweaked and played around with a little, but not too much. Thanks to Jen and Liam for trekking across the sandbar (Jen was actually carried out there!) and making my job so easy. I love backlight and I love what I do!

Daddy's Little Girl-A Wedding in Brewster

There's nothing like seeing your daughter for the first time in her wedding dress on her wedding day. Your little girl is grown up, gorgeous, getting married. Here is a series I shot capturing a father's emotions on seeing his little girl for the first time on her wedding day.

Lots of Fun in the Nantucket Sun: A Friday Wedding in June.

Kate and Dan were all about having fun! They shared their love with me and it shows in their pictures! Nantucket is a wedding photographer's dream with Main Street, the roses and fences, old Pacific Bank, the impromptu use of the Lily Pulitzer jeep, Easy Street and finally the reception at The Whaling Museum. These two were up for anything and made my day extra fun and easy and I thank them for that. Giving and showing your love makes your pictures 1000 times better. So, this entry is all about fun and love and showing it. I wish you two a long life of happiness together.

Quintessential Nantucket Wedding

Leila and Steve were married the other day at the First Congregational Church on Nantucket Island and had their reception at the groom's grandparent's home on the waterfront in Squam. The bride got ready at a home her family rented across the street from the church so she got to have a sneak peek at guests arriving. Her bridesmaids wore the most wonderful shade of pink and carried bouquets created by Soiree Floral.
We stopped at a couple of secret locations along the way to Squam ; ) for some portraits of the couple. They were such troopers and gave a lot to me in the way of working the camera!

The night ended with an impromptu firework display, and the groom, much to everyone's delight, jamming an amazing tune for his bride and guests! I have to mention a few of the vendors: One of my favorite Nantucket wedding planners is Aisling of ACKtivities because she is so calm, sweet and organized. A Taste of Nantucket did a fab job on the food. A shout to Jen at Placesetters!
Another very cool thing is that George from Over Nantucket did a fly by and captured the entire scene by air. As you can see there is yours truly completely distracted and waving at him excitedly. He actually uploaded this photo to Facebook and I got to see it before I got home that night. I am excited about the prospect of offering this service to our future clients. Thanks George!

June 20: Tammy and Ronnie's Lucky Day

The getting ready part of the day is one of my favorite times to photograph the details. I found this little calendar and Tammy's name scheduled in the date book at The Cut Above when I arrived to photograph Tammy getting her hair done. Later at Tresses, where Tammy got her makeup done, I found their notes that had been recorded during their trial session. Dawn Kelly of Soiree Floral created the daisy orbs that Tammy described as being "exactly" what she had envisioned.

A heartfelt congratulations to Tammy and Ronnie who after being together 15 years finally got married last weekend at their home on Nantucket! I have known Ronnie since he was a kid and he has always been one of the nicest kids around. Now he's joined in marriage to his sweetheart and their wedding was amazing. We did not expect good weather at all, but we were blessed with a gorgeous and warm day here on Nantucket and everyone was grateful. These two were so fun to photograph and their details were so cute. Kendra Lockley of Simply with Style put out a mean filet mignon (I know because I got to try it!) While we were in the car going around to some awesome Nantucket photo spots I asked them if being married would change anything for them and they said, "Not at all. We've been together 15 years and nothing will change!" Love to you two forever!

90 Ballerinas, the Slideshow-Click to View

This slideshow is one part of the culmination of the year's work by little Nantucket ballerinas and the wonderful Ms. Jackie. While I was photographing the rehearsals of this performance I was struck by the dedication, patience and efforts put in by the girls. With a reverence toward Ms. Jackie they worked so hard to get the steps right. They were very serious while still having fun doing it. This slideshow is available on DVD to play on your computer for $30. Click here for more details. And thank you to the wonderful Maura Moore for producing it.

I Have a Ring Thing

Lynn and Josh were married last weekend at the White Elephant on Nantucket Island. They had a glorious day after many days of rain. I decided to have some fun with their rings using props from the wedding, including the kid's table and Soiree Floral's wonderful details. I have to mention Placesetters as well since the tables looked so marvelous. I love my job! Thanks guys for having such an awesome wedding!

Fashion, Fun, Fetching

Fetching is a Boston-based personal shopping and styling firm founded by Kerry Waterman who happens to be a bride-to-be (guess who's shooting her wedding this October?) with a very discerning eye for style. Kerry called me a couple of weeks ago and asked me if I'd come up to Boston to photograph her out and about on Newbury Street so that she had some material for her new website. Well, that was a very cool assignment for me, so after waiting for an agreeable weather forecast, I grabbed a puddle-jumper over and met Kerry for an afternoon of shopping. (She actually turned me on to some very cool and comfortable shoes to wear for working weddings). I think a personal shopper/stylist is in order!

Sixth Month Baby Milestone Portrait

The six month mark is certainly a milestone: not quite sitting up, but so aware and adorable! This is our third session together: maternity, newborn and now six months. It so wonderful to have your baby documented this way because as you may know already you can't go backwards and do it again! I've certainly learned that with my kids and though I'm kind of like the shoeless cobbler, I try to capture my children's fleeting childhood while I can.

Jennifer and Erik Marry on Nantucket!

Jennifer graduated from Harvard Medical School on Thursday and was married on Nantucket the following Saturday! Talk about excitement. We had the pleasure to photograph their gorgeous Nantucket wedding on Saturday and work with their families. An entire Finnish contingency came over for the wedding and their little ring bearer spoke no English at all. The spectacular floral arrangements were created by Dawn Kelly and her team at Soiree Floral, the ceremony was at the First Congregational Church and the reception at The White Elephant right on the water. Placesetters is a local company that does the most professional party rentals and table settings.
I loved the color scheme and details paid to this wedding! Libby from our studio helped me out by shooting from different angles so she was in the balcony of the church when she got the ceremony shot shown here.

Beca and James Get Married on Nantucket!

Beca and James were married on Nantucket the other day. The day started rather dark and cloudy only to give way to one of the brightest, most beautiful days of the year so far. Beca had her hair done at The Beauty Bar and her makeup done by Mandy from The Calming Room. Flowers on Chestnut created the gorgeous bouquets and center pieces and the reception was held at The Galley Beach.
We had so much fun doing what we love to do: photographing the gorgeous couples and settings we are so blessed to have with a Nantucket wedding. A kick off to a great season!
